At 5 a.m. on Friday, May 26, hundreds of eager men and women lined up in front of Keenan’s Irish Pub in North Wildwood for “Eggs with Peg”, a Coors Light sponsored event the pub throws annually to kickoff Memorial Day weekend and celebrate the beginning of beach season.
The sky blushed pink and gold behind gray clouds that drifted south, as a cool breeze blew in from the nearby ocean, carrying with it the fresh smell of salt water and the cries of seagulls. The crowd grew larger and more spirited with each minute. A man wearing an Uncle Sam costume sprinted down New Jersey Avenue, waving an American flag above his head, while people chanted, “U-S-A! U-S-A!” and saluted him. A middle-aged couple danced on the sidewalk, their feet in loose sandals, their arms hooked tight around each other, while Frank Sinatra blared from a phone tucked inside one of their pockets.
One look at the crowd and you could tell everyone was ready for summer. They were ready for the sun, the beach and the boardwalk. More than anything, though, they were ready for beer.
The pub started serving alcohol at 7 a.m., shortly after the doors opened. Double-fisting bottles of Coors Light and Twisted Tea, party-goers shouldered their way toward a stage at the far end of the pub, where The Preston and Steve Show, a morning radio program on Philadelphia’s 93.3 WMMR, was doing a live broadcast.
Radio personalities Preston & Steve have hosted their comical show live at Eggs with Peg since 2005. Each year, during their broadcast, they select volunteers from the crowd to participate in outrageous contests such as “Twerk Hard for the Money,” “Point Break Crowd Surfing” and “Guess What’s in My Pants”.
Year after year, contest after contest, Preston & Steve continue to up the ante at Eggs with Peg, treating their fans to an unforgettable show. After a decade of dreaming up new contests, however, you have to wonder if maybe – just maybe – they’re running out of material.
Were they be able to make us laugh until our eyes watered and our ribs hurt? Were they be able to outdo past performances?
I’ll let you be the judge…
Scott and Sean Get a New Mom
The owner of the pub, Scott Keenan and his brother, Sean were summoned to the stage at the beginning of the show. Scott and Sean’s mother, Margaret “Peggy” Keenan—the woman for whom Eggs with Peg was named—had passed away on December 29, 2016. As a tribute to Peggy, Preston and Steve decided to pick out her replacement, a woman who they hoped would fill the void their mother left behind: Angela Perfetto, a P&S Office Calendar girl and former member of the Philadelphia Passion lingerie football team.
